Newborns breathe mainly through the nose, so a blocked nose affects feeding and sleep before anything else. The NoseFrida is a nasal aspirator designed by a Swedish paediatric ear, nose and throat doctor. Suction is powered and controlled by the parent, the tube rests against the outside of the nostril rather than inside it, and a single-use hygiene filter sits between the mucus and your mouth.

How it works

• Apply saline first: two to three drops in each nostril, then wait 20 to 30 seconds so mucus is thin enough to move.
• Rest the large tube against the outside of one nostril to create a seal. It does not go inside.
• Breathe in steadily through the mouthpiece for two to three seconds, moving the tube in a small circle. Repeat, then switch sides.
• Dispose of the filter and wash the parts in warm soapy water or the top rack of the dishwasher.

How to use

• Wet the skin and brush in small, light circles with baby wash or warm water.

Giving a baby liquid medicine with a spoon or open syringe often ends with most of it on the bib. The MediFrida is shaped like a dummy: measure the dose into the attached syringe, let baby suck, and the liquid is delivered to the side of the cheek in the same motion.

How to use

• Draw the prescribed dose into the syringe using the measurement markings.
• Attach the syringe to the dummy and offer it as you normally would.
• Press the plunger slowly as baby sucks. Detach and wash all parts after use.
