No teeth yet. Still needs cleaning. Yes, really.

The Australian Dental Association recommends starting oral care before the first tooth appears. The Fingerbrush makes it easy enough that you'll actually do it.

Why baby dental care starts before the first tooth

Most Australian parents know they should brush their child's teeth. Fewer know that dental care is recommended to start before any teeth appear, from birth, in fact, with gum cleaning after feeds. The Australian Dental Association's guidance on infant oral health recommends cleaning a baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth or silicone finger brush from the newborn period, transitioning to a proper brush as teeth begin to emerge.

Why does gum care matter before teeth? Because the bacteria that cause tooth decay live in the mouth before any teeth appear. Regular gum cleaning removes milk residue, reduces bacterial load, and importantly gets your bub used to having something in their mouth for oral care before they develop strong opinions about it. A 3-month-old who's used to the Fingerbrush will be a much more cooperative 12-month-old during tooth brushing.

The Frida Baby Fingerbrush makes this routine easy. It slips over your finger, fits a small baby's mouth without difficulty, and the triple-angled bristles clean gums efficiently in a few gentle sweeps. Start early. Your future self and your bub's future dentist will thank you.

    Small mouth, smart design.

    • Triple-angled silicone bristles

Cleans and massages gums and teeth from three angles simultaneously. More effective than a flat brush in fewer strokes and a gentler experience for a bub who's still getting used to this whole oral care thing.

    • Double-sided design

Cleans both sides of the gum or tooth in one pass. Also protects your finger when your bub decides to bite down which is not a matter of if, but when. The silicone takes it. You're welcome.

    • 100% food-grade silicone

BPA-free, phthalate-free, latex-free. Soft enough for newborn gums, durable enough to last through teething. Bacteria-resistant so it stays hygienic between uses.

    • Works with or without toothpaste

For babies under 18 months, water alone is fine for gum cleaning. When first teeth appear, a smear of low-fluoride infant toothpaste can be used. The Fingerbrush works equally well either way.

    • Teething relief bonus

The gentle silicone massage action soothes sore, swollen gums during teething. Rub along the gum line slowly for a few seconds many bubs find the pressure noticeably calming during teething discomfort.

    • Storage stand included

The brush comes with a stand and lid that keeps it clean and dust-free between uses. Store it on the bathroom shelf so it's visible and part of the routine, out of sight tends to mean out of habit.

Why a finger brush and what makes this one good

A finger brush works differently to a regular toothbrush. Instead of holding a handle and manoeuvring a brush head into a small, wriggling baby's mouth, you slip the brush over your index finger and use your own hand control to clean. You feel exactly what you're doing. You can adjust pressure instantly. You have far more precision in a tiny mouth than any stick-handled brush allows.

The Frida Baby Fingerbrush is made from 100% food-grade silicone soft, flexible, and bacteria-resistant. The triple-angled bristle design cleans and massages in three directions simultaneously rather than one, which means fewer strokes to cover the same area and a gentler overall experience for your bub. The double-sided construction means it cleans both the gum or tooth surface and the inner side in one pass.

There's also a practical bonus: the double-sided design protects your finger when your bub clamps down. Because they will clamp down. Repeatedly and with surprising force. The silicone absorbs this rather than your knuckle.

How to use the Frida Baby Fingerbrush

    Wash your hands first.

You're putting your finger in your baby's mouth. Clean hands are non-negotiable.

Slip the brush over your index finger.

It should fit snugly, the finger hole is designed to accommodate most adult index fingers without slipping during use.

    Add toothpaste if appropriate.

For babies under 18 months, a tiny smear of low-fluoride infant toothpaste is recommended if any teeth have appeared. For gum cleaning before teeth, water alone is fine. Always use infant-formulated toothpaste not adult toothpaste.

Gently clean the gums and teeth.

Use slow, gentle circular or sweeping motions along the gum line. Cover the front gums, back gums, and any teeth that are present. The triple-angle bristles do more work per stroke than a flat brush, you don't need to apply much pressure.

    Rinse and store.

Rinse the Fingerbrush with warm water after every use. Place it back in the storage stand with the lid on to keep it clean and dust-free until next time.

Baby dental care from birth to toddler, the Frida progression

    • Birth — 6 months - Gum cleaning with the Fingerbrush

No teeth yet, but the bacteria that cause tooth decay are already present. Clean gums after feeds with the Fingerbrush and water. Establish the routine before bub develops opinions about it.

    • 6 — 18 months - First teeth with the Fingerbrush

As teeth appear (usually front bottom teeth first, then top), continue with the Fingerbrush. Add a tiny smear of low-fluoride infant toothpaste from the first tooth. The Fingerbrush handles first teeth comfortably up to a full set of front teeth.

    • 18 — 24 months - Graduate to the ToothHugger

As more teeth appear and bub becomes more opinionated, transition to the Frida Baby ToothHugger. Its U-shaped design cleans all three sides of each tooth at once, front, back, and top, in about ten seconds. A much faster clean for a much more mobile toddler.

    Questions? We've got answers.

When should I start cleaning my baby's gums?

The Australian Dental Association recommends starting oral care before the first tooth appears, ideally from birth. Cleaning your baby's gums after feeds removes milk residue and reduces the bacteria that cause early tooth decay. The Frida Baby Fingerbrush can be used from 3 months for this purpose, and a soft damp cloth can be used from birth. Starting early also gets your baby used to the sensation before they develop strong opinions about it.

Do I need toothpaste before my baby has teeth?

No — for gum cleaning before teeth appear, water alone is fine. Once the first tooth emerges, a tiny smear of low-fluoride infant toothpaste is recommended by the Australian Dental Association. Always use infant-formulated toothpaste, not adult toothpaste, which contains fluoride levels not appropriate for babies and young children who swallow rather than spit.

Can the Fingerbrush help with teething pain?

Yes — the gentle silicone massage action of the Fingerbrush provides real relief for many babies during teething. The pressure on sore, swollen gums helps calm the discomfort. Rub slowly along the gum line in the areas that seem most tender. It won't replace teething toys or other relief methods, but it's a useful additional tool, and it gets the gums clean at the same time.

How do I clean the Fingerbrush?

Rinse with warm water after every use. For a more thorough clean, wash with mild soap and warm water and allow to air dry. The silicone material is bacteria-resistant but benefits from regular proper cleaning. Store in the included stand with the lid on to keep it clean between uses. Replace the brush if the bristles show significant wear or damage.

How do I clean the NoseFrida?

When should I switch from the Fingerbrush to a regular toothbrush? The Fingerbrush works well from 3 months through to approximately 18–24 months as teeth emerge. As your bub develops more teeth and becomes more mobile and opinionated about tooth brushing, transition to the Frida Baby ToothHugger, its U-shaped design cleans all three sides of teeth simultaneously, making the process faster and easier for toddlers. The ToothHugger is recommended from 18 months.
